Even the earliest cave drawings often included such suggestive imagery. For example, on the banks of the Danube River, there is a  25,000-year-old rock carving that clearly depicts a woman with exaggerated breasts.

The art left behind by the ancient Greeks and Romans described the pleasures of straight, gay, and group sex. In Peru, scenes of intercourse were drawn on pottery. Lastly, everyone has at least heard of Kama Sutra? Dating back to 400 BCE or 300 CE, this sex manual is the oldest surviving Hindu text on the subject of erotic love.

Europe

The development of erotic art continued in Europe, where rich aristocrats commissioned sexually charged artworks, very explicit at times. The Catholic church is known to have destroyed I Modi, a book with engravings depicting sex positions, during the Renaissance. In the 18th century, the great Empress of The Russian Empire Catherine II was rumored to have a special erotic art room. There, elaborate furniture elements resembled human sexual organs. Next, came the nude paintings of such renowned impressionists as Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas, which shocked the public in the 19th century. However, this was not yet porn as we know it.

Birth of Porn

The emergence of pornography in our modern understanding is attributed to the Victorian Era. This was the time when humans also started devising laws to prohibit the sale and publication of the material. In 1857, The English Obscene Publications Act was passed, and the police were tasked with seizing and destroying sex materials.

Two decades later, the United States followed suit by banning distribution of so-called “obscene” items by mail. Nevertheless, the term in question remained undefined until British, and later American, courts established the Hicklin test for obscenity. This described it as the “tendency … to deprave and corrupt those whose minds are open to such immoral influences, and into whose hands a publication of this sort may fall.”

Despite the laws, “obscenity” continued to evolve and spread. The invention of the moving picture provided pornographers with another tool. In 1896, video porn pioneers Eugène Pirou and Albert Kirchner directed Le coucher de la mariée. which showed a woman undressing for her spouse. Consequently, a whole wave of such films, which were distributed privately, reached the US.

Legalization

Denmark was the first country to abolish censorship laws. This 1969 decision ushered in the Golden Age of Pornography. Erotic movies entered the mainstream. In Blue Movie, Andy Warhol showed unsimulated straight sex. Sex was seen in The Last Tango in Paris, Mona, Deep Throat, and The Devil and Mrs. Jones. Later, the hippie movement appeared, and state regulations became less and less rigorous.

Online

In the 1990s, pornography went online, becoming an extremely lucrative business. It is estimated that half of all Internet content nowadays is related to porn. New technologies and gadgets are incessantly transforming the industry. Today, there are porn video games, and the content produced by porn studios may be viewed on any mobile devices. New videos are added daily. Finally, with VR, porn has become interactive.
